Cartoneras in London: Untold Stories from Latin America

November 23, 2019 at 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Cartoneras (Cardboard Publishing) is a unique grassroots Latin American publishing phenomenon, which offers alternative forms of community engagement, activism, and social change.

The event will offer the chance to find out about this unique grassroots Latin American publishing phenomenon, and the Latin American community in London.

A presentation by researchers Lucy Bell (University of Surrey) and María Soledad Montañez (University of London) will be followed by a “hands-on” workshop where the audience will be able to try their hand at making their own cardboard book.

This collaborative event involves two different AHRC projects in England – namely the OWRI’s Cross Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community from the Institute of Modern Languages Research, University of London, and Cartonera Publishing: Relations, meaning and community in movement – in collaboration with the Migration Museum, the Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation (IRMO), and Southwark Council.

Door opens from 14.00, for those interested in exploring the museum’s exhibition.

Workshop: 15.00-17.00

Light refreshments.

Family friendly.

Free but ticketed. Please book your place: modernlanguages.sas.ac.uk/events/event/20195
