SUMMARY:Surrealism and music in France\, 1924-1952: Alexander Soares Recital
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a piano recital of relevant French repertoire by the outstanding young pianist Alexander Soares. \nPraised as a pianist of “huge intensity” (The Telegraph)\, Alexander Soares is developing a reputation as an artist of formidable technique and virtuosity\, with performances of “diamond clarity and authority” (BBC Radio 3 ‘In Tune’). In 2015\, his performance in the BBCSO / BBC Radio 3 ‘Boulez at 90’ celebrations received widespread critical acclaim in the press\, described as a “brilliantly unbuttoned account” (The Sunday Times) and “most memorable of all” (The Financial Times). \nContemporary French repertoire forms a major part of Alexander’s programming. Since a U.K. premiére of Tristan Murail’s work in the BBCSO Total Immersion series\, he has performed this repertoire in his debut recitals in the Royal Festival Hall\, the Purcell Room\, and the Bridgewater Hall. In 2014\, he collaborated with Diego Masson performing Messiaen’s Des Canyons aux Étoiles in Milton Court Concert Hall. The following year\, he performed Boulez’s Dérive with David Corkhill in LSO St. Luke’s. SUMMARY:Iberian Sound Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Recent years have seen a growing interest in ‘sound studies’\, a field of study that addresses the role of the auditory in culture and society. This one-day symposium seeks to establish a dialogue between sound studies and Iberian cultural studies. It intends to examine the place of sound both across a range of Iberian contexts (architecture\, geography\, acoustic environments) and media (sound technologies and sound art\, music and film\, for instance). \nUsing the auditory as a critical starting point\, the workshop seeks to address the following questions: How does sound inform our understanding of Spanish and Portuguese history — and in particular\, their long and fraught road towards modernization? How might the categories of noise and silence\, for instance\, enable us to illuminate more fully historical junctures of crisis and contradiction within the Iberian peninsula? SUMMARY:Contemporary Jewish Women’s Writing in Germany and Austria – A ‘Minor’ Literature?
DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop aims to probe whether the label and concept of a ‘minor literature’ (Deleuze/Guattari\, 1975) can be usefully applied to contemporary writing by female Jewish authors in Germany and Austria. The workshop will explore what the term ‘minor’ could mean and contribute when discussing a broad range of contemporary authors and their aesthetics and writing practices\, images of the self/the other inside and outside of their works\, forms of community building\, and their relationship with the broader literary field (i.e. the literary market). \nThis event includes a reading by Mirna Funk. The award-winning German-Jewish author will read from her novel “Winternähe” (2015). The novel was awarded the “Uwe Johnson prize” for emerging writers and nominated for the “aspekte literature prize”\, the “Klaus Michael Kühne prize” and the “Ulla Hahn prize” for “best debut novel”. Mirna Funk\, who is also known for her high-profile journalism on themes related to cultures of remembrance and Jewish culture in contemporary Germany\, will read in German. SUMMARY:Translating rights: indigenous language policy as practice in Hispanicised Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Professor Rosaleen Howard is Chair of Hispanic Studies at Newcastle University. She joined the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle from the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of Liverpool in July 2005 and works on the anthropology and sociolinguistics of the Andes. Her research is based on field work in areas where both Spanish and Quechua are spoken (Ecuador\, Peru and Bolivia). Her PhD dealt with Quechua oral storytelling in highland Ecuador. Since then she has published widely on Quechua oral history; anthropological approaches to the study of language contact\, especially translation issues; language politics and cultural identity in the Andes; and intercultural education policy for indigenous peoples.

SUMMARY:A New Language - a new life? Translingual literature by contemporary women writers
DESCRIPTION:This symposium will bring together scholars working on translingual women’s writing in the language fields of Italian\, French and German. We will explore the particular richness of texts produced by writers in languages that are not their mother tongues. Among the questions we will explore are the following: \n• Is translingual writing perceived by the authors in question as a liberation and a new beginning\, or as a requirement demanded by the literary market?\n• How does the particular attention to language required in translingual writing affect the text?\n• What are the distinctive literary and linguistic strategies employed in translingual writing?\n• Does writing in a foreign tongue go hand in hand with establishing a new identity?\n• What can translingual writing achieve that goes beyond the possibilities of texts produced by mother-tongue writers? \nThe symposium is conceived as a springboard for a larger international conference on women’s translingual writing\, which is being planned for 2019. To express interest\, please email: info@slori.org\nAbout the event\nThe Friuli Venezia Giulia (Friulian: Friûl–Vignesie Julie\, Slovene: Furlanija – Julijska krajina\, German: Friaul–Julisch Venetien) is one of five autonomous regions of Italy with special statute because of its multiethnic sociocultural context. \nDespite of the multicultural history and the current cultural landscape of the region\, Italian is the only official language; the regional and national minority languages (such as Friulian\, Slovenian and German) are widespread in certain areas\, but they enjoy different rights and have at least partly different statuses in terms of official recognition\, services\, and perceptions. In addition\, a multitude of other languages have been introduced by different communities that have moved here over the centuries (Croatians\, Serbs\, Greeks\, Jews\, and many others). The proximity and the coexistence of different languages from at least three different groups (Italic\, Germanic\, and Slavic) have generated various communication habits and practices among speakers and a wide range of language phenomena. This picture is replicated beyond regional and national borders: on the Slovenian coast\, a large Italian community is settled and the region is officially recognised as bilingual. \nThe aim of this conference is to show some language contact phenomena among minorities and/or border communities in the region and\, more generally\, in Europe. In particular\, we will discuss topics such as: \n> Everyday language practices among speakers in “contact areas”\, their communication\, and compensations strategies (code switching\, code mixing\, hybridisation\, calques\, borrowings …);\n> Formal analysis of language contact phenomena (phonology\, morphology\, syntax structures …);\n> Consequences and challenges: language loss or obsolescence; parallel standard\, language secessionism\, new koiné; status change (“minority language” -> “heritage language”) …;\n> The exposure to different uses\, registers\, and lects of the minority language continuum as a possible key factor of a successful language policy;\n> The contact phenomena in language education and training programmes. \nMore details\, abstracts and bios
