SUMMARY:Language and Identity: Explorations Through Film
DESCRIPTION:The dynamic relationship between languages and the different community identities to which they are linked can be explored innovatively through film.  This event will showcase four short films made by former students of the University of Manchester’s Visual Anthropology MA programme\, who are now independent film makers. They address themes from the Manchester-led\, Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded ‘Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community’ research project which supported the films. DESCRIPTION:Echoes Festival is the first and only annual festival showcasing the classical music of Spain\, Portugal and Latin America – launched in 2016 as the new flagship project of ILAMS (the Iberian and Latin American Music Society)\, in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute. SUMMARY:Storytelling in Spanish / Espectaculo de Cuentacuentos en Español
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Community Engagement Project with Latin Americans in London and the UK\, OWRI-Cross Dynamics: Reshaping Communities\, in partnership with Southwark Council\, will be holding a FREE storytelling session in Spanish at Canada Water Library on Saturday 1st of September\, from 3-4pm. \nBy supporting and promoting mother/father tongues within minority communities we aim to celebrate linguistic diversity\, encourage multilingual education and help to develop understanding\, tolerance and dialogue. It is also a chance to explore dynamic and creative ways of community engagement. \nThe session is free and open to the general public\, but designed for families with children up to 8 years old. The storytelling is created and performed by Daniela Hathaway.  \nDaniela Hathaway was born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. She studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music in London. As a recitalist Daniela has performed concerts and operas in the UK\, Argentina\, France and Mexico. Once she moved to Scotland and had a family\, Daniela trained as a Colourstrings Music Teacher and Kodaly Instructor. She has worked for NYcos\, the RCS and the Scottish Opera. Daniela has had residencies with Platform theatre in Glasgow and MC Opera creating plays for young children and their families. Currently she divides her time between teaching singing in mainstream schools and ASN schools\, as well as at the RSNo\, and performances for young audiences and care homes in Scotland. SUMMARY:Beyond Words: Multimodal Encounters in Translation
DESCRIPTION:Research into the theory and practice of translation has traditionally focused on the conversion of source texts into target texts. However\, during the past decade the rise and sprawl of digital media has ensured that interconnections between different visual\, aural\, and oral modalities have acquired much greater cultural prominence – a development that has destabilised certain time-honoured translation-theoretic paradigms. This shift has directed critical attention towards acts of translation involving more than one modality. Moving beyond text-to-text translation\, pioneering work by a number of scholars has begun to explore different kinds of text-to-music\, text-to-dance\, text-to-image\, dance-to-image\, music-to-dance\, dance-to-text\, and image-to-music transfers. While some of these approaches draw upon well-established traditions of ekphrasis and iconology that can be traced back through the centuries\, they also probe in new and provocative ways the limits of these activities. Indeed\, for some scholars the very term ‘translation’ has become an inadequate one for describing the full range of interactions involving the transfer of meaning from one modality to another. Therefore\, terms such as ‘transduction’\, ‘transaptation’\, ‘transformation’\, and ‘transcription’\, have sometimes been usefully repurposed. But how do these practices differ from each other\, and what are their distinctive respective characteristics? While this is still an inchoate field of enquiry\, it has already inspired ground-breaking analytical approaches that deserve careful scrutiny. A core purpose of this event is to bring together both those who produce multimodal ‘translations’ as well as those who theorise about them. By encouraging truly inter and trans-disciplinary dialogue\, this conference aspires to impact on research directions in the area of translation and multimodality. \nThe conference will take the form of a two-day event. Each of the eight main speakers will prepare a paper in advance\, and these will be distributed to all the registered delegates two weeks before the start of the event. Each speaker will have a 20-minute slot during the conference in which to give a short verbal summary of their paper\, followed by a further 25 minutes of questions from the attendees. In addition\, there will be two workshops that will showcase practical multimedia examples of multimodal translation in action. SUMMARY:Critical Reflections on Multilingual Research Practice
DESCRIPTION:Increasing numbers of researchers are engaging in studies involving complex contexts of ‘superdiversity’ and participants who have a broad range of linguistic repertoires and communication needs. Yet there are often limited opportunities for scholars to exchange knowledge and experience on key conceptual\, epistemological and methodological questions. \nThis event invites critical reflection on what it means to conduct research multilingually. It is anchored around examples of recent research projects that help to shed light on questions facing researchers interested in investigating the multilingual practices of others\, researchers who draw on their own multilingual capabilities as part of their research practice\, and the role of intermediaries in research such as translators and interpreters. \nThe event will be of particular interest to doctoral candidates and early career researchers working on areas in which multilingualism is prominent\, but also to more established researchers new to these areas. \nOrganised by Multilingual Manchester at the School of Arts\, Languages and Cultures at the University of Manchester. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a piano recital of relevant French repertoire by the outstanding young pianist Alexander Soares. \nPraised as a pianist of “huge intensity” (The Telegraph)\, Alexander Soares is developing a reputation as an artist of formidable technique and virtuosity\, with performances of “diamond clarity and authority” (BBC Radio 3 ‘In Tune’). In 2015\, his performance in the BBCSO / BBC Radio 3 ‘Boulez at 90’ celebrations received widespread critical acclaim in the press\, described as a “brilliantly unbuttoned account” (The Sunday Times) and “most memorable of all” (The Financial Times). \nContemporary French repertoire forms a major part of Alexander’s programming. Since a U.K. premiére of Tristan Murail’s work in the BBCSO Total Immersion series\, he has performed this repertoire in his debut recitals in the Royal Festival Hall\, the Purcell Room\, and the Bridgewater Hall. DESCRIPTION:Recent years have seen a growing interest in ‘sound studies’\, a field of study that addresses the role of the auditory in culture and society. This one-day symposium seeks to establish a dialogue between sound studies and Iberian cultural studies. It intends to examine the place of sound both across a range of Iberian contexts (architecture\, geography\, acoustic environments) and media (sound technologies and sound art\, music and film\, for instance). \nUsing the auditory as a critical starting point\, the workshop seeks to address the following questions: How does sound inform our understanding of Spanish and Portuguese history — and in particular\, their long and fraught road towards modernization? SUMMARY:Contemporary Jewish Women’s Writing in Germany and Austria – A ‘Minor’ Literature?
DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop aims to probe whether the label and concept of a ‘minor literature’ (Deleuze/Guattari\, 1975) can be usefully applied to contemporary writing by female Jewish authors in Germany and Austria. The workshop will explore what the term ‘minor’ could mean and contribute when discussing a broad range of contemporary authors and their aesthetics and writing practices\, images of the self/the other inside and outside of their works\, forms of community building\, and their relationship with the broader literary field (i.e. the literary market). \nThis event includes a reading by Mirna Funk. The award-winning German-Jewish author will read from her novel “Winternähe” (2015). The novel was awarded the “Uwe Johnson prize” for emerging writers and nominated for the “aspekte literature prize”\, the “Klaus Michael Kühne prize” and the “Ulla Hahn prize” for “best debut novel”. Mirna Funk\, who is also known for her high-profile journalism on themes related to cultures of remembrance and Jewish culture in contemporary Germany\, will read in German. SUMMARY:Translating rights: indigenous language policy as practice in Hispanicised Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Professor Rosaleen Howard is Chair of Hispanic Studies at Newcastle University. She joined the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle from the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of Liverpool in July 2005 and works on the anthropology and sociolinguistics of the Andes. Her research is based on field work in areas where both Spanish and Quechua are spoken (Ecuador\, Peru and Bolivia). Her PhD dealt with Quechua oral storytelling in highland Ecuador. Since then she has published widely on Quechua oral history; anthropological approaches to the study of language contact\, especially translation issues; language politics and cultural identity in the Andes; and intercultural education policy for indigenous peoples.

We will explore the particular richness of texts produced by writers in languages that are not their mother tongues. To express interest\, please email: info@slori.org\nAbout the event\nThe Friuli Venezia Giulia (Friulian: Friûl–Vignesie Julie\, Slovene: Furlanija – Julijska krajina\, German: Friaul–Julisch Venetien) is one of five autonomous regions of Italy with special statute because of its multiethnic sociocultural context. \nDespite of the multicultural history and the current cultural landscape of the region\, Italian is the only official language; the regional and national minority languages (such as Friulian\, Slovenian and German) are widespread in certain areas\, but they enjoy different rights and have at least partly different statuses in terms of official recognition\, services\, and perceptions. In addition\, a multitude of other languages have been introduced by different communities that have moved here over the centuries (Croatians\, Serbs\, Greeks\, Jews\, and many others). The proximity and the coexistence of different languages from at least three different groups (Italic\, Germanic\, and Slavic) have generated various communication habits and practices among speakers and a wide range of language phenomena. This picture is replicated beyond regional and national borders: on the Slovenian coast\, a large Italian community is settled and the region is officially recognised as bilingual. \nThe aim of this conference is to show some language contact phenomena among minorities and/or border communities in the region and\, more generally\, in Europe.
