SUMMARY:Making Theatre in Exile
DESCRIPTION:Delving into a suitcase full of sketches\, songs and letters\, the theatre group [Foreign Affairs] brings to life the story of the Laterndl theatre in Hampstead\, established by a group of exile actors and writers from Nazi-occupied Austria during the Second World War. Rekindling the Viennese tradition of political cabaret\, they reflect on their new surroundings and hopes for the future\, and bring a beacon of light to the 30\,000-strong traumatised refugee community. The Laterndl received wide critical acclaim and soon came to symbolise the community’s resistance to Nazi terror and assertion of an independent Austrian identity and culture. \n‘Making Theatre in Exile’ re-discovers the Laterndl through the work of the Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies on the Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Archive\, deposited in 2001 at the Institute of Modern Languages Research (University of London). \nPerformed in the original German and English\, this project has been made possible by sponsorship from the Miller Trust\, the Being Human Festival\, the Austrian Cultural Forum London\, and the Open World Research Initiative (OWRI). \n\nDoors open for the 1st performance at 6 pm \nDoors open for the 2nd performance at 8 pm \nAttendance is free\, but seating is limited and advance online booking is essential.  Seats are not numbered\, and are allocated on a first come\, first served basis. Each performance will last approximately 2 hours. \nBOOKING FOR 6PM PERFORMANCE – OPENS 1 SEPTEMBER \nBOOKING FOR 8PM PERFORMANCE – OPENS 1 SEPTEMBER \nVenue Notes \nThe Hampstead Jazz Club is located in the basement cellar of a 1721 pub. There is no stair-free access. Persons with limited mobility can use the external staircase which has railings.\nThere is a bar for drinks in the Club; booking a table for dinner upstairs in the Duke of Hamilton at least one hour before the start time is recommended. \nHow to get there \n\nThis event is part of the Being Human festival\, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities\, taking place 14–23 November.   Led by the School of Advanced Study\, University of London\, in partnership with the Arts & Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. \nFor further information please see beinghumanfestival.org

SUMMARY:Digital Modern Languages Seminar Series Launch
DESCRIPTION:Professor Claire Taylor\, University of Liverpool: ‘Points of Intersection: Digital Modern Languages’ \nAbstract: In my talk I would like to explore the points of interconnection that have arisen in recent years between Modern Languages and the digital broadly conceived\, this latter encompassing digital humanities\, digital culture\, digital pedagogy\, and many more. Starting from an overview of recent developments in Modern Languages research that have engaged with the digital\, I subsequently set out the crucial contributions that Modern Linguists can make to debates in Digital Humanities and Digital Culture Studies. I highlight in particular the insights that Modern Linguists can offer regarding co-creation; a commitment to community engagement; a contestation of Anglophone models; and a linguistically- and culturally-specific cultural studies approach to digital materials. In this way\, the talk argues\, Modern Languages scholarship on the digital can be part of the productive dialogue between humanities-based approaches and cultural studies-based approaches that currently characterises debates in Digital Humanities and Digital Culture studies alike\, and can contribute to the shape of these fields. \nClaire Taylor is Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool and leads the Digital Latin American Cultures Network with Thea Pitman and Tori Holmes. \nThe seminar will be followed by a wine reception. \nATTENDANCE FREE BUT PLACES LIMITED. CLICK HERE TO BOOK. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DIGITAL MODERN LANGUAGES SERIES \nThis series is part of the AHRC-funded Open World Research Initiative\, and is supported by OWRI projects Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community and Language Acts and Worldmaking projects\, and by the AHRC Leadership Fellow for Modern Languages (Janice Carruthers). The series is convened by Paul Spence (King’s College London) and Naomi Wells (Institute of Modern Languages Research).

It includes mental health service users and people of diverse backgrounds. \nTeléfono de la Esperanza is a Migrant Health charity that offers a free comprehensive mental health service for the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking communities in London. \nSince 2015 Brixton Reel Film Festival has been working with TEUK-Voades and Southwark Council in the delivery of its health and wellbeing outreach events. Brixton Reel has developed a long-term relationship with TEUK which provides strong links with the Spanish-speaking Latin American communities in Southwark and Lambeth. \nThis year’s festival edition focuses on the seldom heard stories of mental wellbeing by BAME communities in London. Black Asian and Minority ethnic people’s stories are rarely told. This year Brixton Reel Film Festival is asking members from Black Asian and Minority ethnic communities (including the Latin American community) and LGBTQ+ people to tell their own stories on mental wellbeing. \nOWRI in partnership with TEUK-Voades will organise a workshop with young Latin Americans living in London to learn more about their views on mental health. The workshop aims to explore how cultural and linguistic differences (re)shape the way we speak about mental health. Their recorded testimonials will offer insight into the way culture and language shape our understanding of mental health. \nThe festival takes place on two dates this year with an early event on World Mental Health Day 10th October and the main festival taking place from 8th to 15th November. The festival will take place in Lambeth\, Southwark and Hackney. \n

SUMMARY:Surrealism and music in France\, 1924-1952: Alexander Soares Recital
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a piano recital of relevant French repertoire by the outstanding young pianist Alexander Soares. \nPraised as a pianist of “huge intensity” (The Telegraph)\, Alexander Soares is developing a reputation as an artist of formidable technique and virtuosity\, with performances of “diamond clarity and authority” (BBC Radio 3 ‘In Tune’). In 2015\, his performance in the BBCSO / BBC Radio 3 ‘Boulez at 90’ celebrations received widespread critical acclaim in the press\, described as a “brilliantly unbuttoned account” (The Sunday Times) and “most memorable of all” (The Financial Times). \nContemporary French repertoire forms a major part of Alexander’s programming. Since a U.K. premiére of Tristan Murail’s work in the BBCSO Total Immersion series\, he has performed this repertoire in his debut recitals in the Royal Festival Hall\, the Purcell Room\, and the Bridgewater Hall. In 2014\, he collaborated with Diego Masson performing Messiaen’s Des Canyons aux Étoiles in Milton Court Concert Hall. The following year\, he performed Boulez’s Dérive with David Corkhill in LSO St. Luke’s. His first album will be recorded in 2016\, comprising of the solo works of Boulez\, Dutilleux and Messiaen. \nMore information: www.alexander-soares.com \nProgramme:\nAndré Jolivet: Piano Sonata no. 1\nOlivier Messiaen: Île de feu 1\nOlivier Messiaen: Prélude (1964)\nPierre Boulez: Douze Notations\nPierre Boulez: Une page d’éphéméride \nThe recital forms part of a conference\, organised by the Institute of Modern Languages Research. The links between surrealism and the emerging disciplines of ethnology and ethnomusicology redefined the concept of exoticism in France and were the subject of a good deal of polemical debate. However\, connections between surrealism and music have been little explored. This conference initiates a transdisciplinary and international dialogue and will situate music at the heart of these debates. \nParis was the principal centre of surrealist activity and the focus of connections between surrealist literature\, ethnology\, sociology\, visual arts and music. It is clear the movement had a decisive influence on major French composers such as Pierre Boulez\, Olivier Messiaen and André Jolivet. \nPlease register in advanced: £5 recital only\, or as part of the conference registration fee. \nFind out more about the conference here. \nBook for the recital only here. \n
